Watkins Glen, NY – a quick winter trip

[metaslider id=509]

Kelly and I recently had a short business trip we needed to take up to the Finger Lakes region of New York.  I’ve never been to the Finger Lakes region and Kelly hasn’t been there since she camped there as a youth.

With it being the dead of winter it really limited some of the outdoor activities.  The gorge trail was closed at the park, but some of the other trails were open.  Unfortunately we hadn’t really planned properly and didn’t have the right winter equipment and shoes along.  I also didn’t have the right camera along for taking some nice long exposure pictures of waterfalls covered in ice.

We did visit the Watkins Glen State Park gift shop and looked around the entrance of the gorge.  That mostly what’s shown in the pictures above.

We did do the Corning Museum of Glass and highly recommend that to anyone that likes to see some talented artisans work.  You really should figure on a full day at the museum.

It was Valentine’s weekend so we did hit plenty of wineries.  The Finger Lakes region is known for it’s wineries, and there were plenty of them.  We only stopped at about six, and drove past plenty of others.  We learned more about wine and got to spend some nice time together.

We definitely plan to return, probably sometime this summer when we can better enjoy some of the outdoor activities available around Watkins Glen and the Finger Lakes, like:

If you’re into racing, Watkins Glen Speedway would definitely be of interest.  If you plan to visit the area when a race is in town, be sure to schedule accommodations well in advance as many hotels and bed and breakfasts will sell out quick.
